Maiquetía is Now Operating Under New Logistics: Provisional Tents, Active Flights, and Valencia's Support
As of today, September 1st, Simon Bolivar International Airport in Maiquetía (CCS) has officially resumed operations. Following intense weeks of structural repairs, the country's main aviation hub is welcoming passengers back, but under a strict contingency plan approved by INAC that completely changes the usual travel experience.
The New Dynamic: Check-in and Baggage Drop in Tents
To ensure operability while the main infrastructure is finalized, Maiquetía is currently functioning through a provisional terminal system. Large, climate-controlled tents have been installed outside the airport where airlines manage their processes:
- Segmented Zones: Each airline operates in assigned rows or tents to handle check-in and baggage drop.
- Unified Checkpoints: Immigration and security screening (X-rays) are also conducted in these structures before entering the few operational boarding gates.
- Early Arrival: Because this is a modular process, wait times are longer. Arriving much earlier than usual is mandatory to avoid missing connections.
Confirmed Flights: The Route Map from Caracas
Despite reduced capacity and limited available slots, Maiquetía already has a solid network of reactivated flights connecting the country domestically and internationally:
- Connections to Europe: Air Europa and Iberia have resumed direct flights on the Caracas - Madrid route. Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas and Laser Airlines are also operating flights to the Spanish capital.
- North America and the Caribbean: American Airlines and Laser Airlines are currently offering connections from Caracas to Miami. Additionally, Laser Airlines includes Santo Domingo in its routes, while Conviasa connects Caracas with Havana and Saint Lucia.
- South and Central America: For travel to Bogotá, passengers can choose LATAM Airlines and Wingo, as well as Laser Airlines. Copa Airlines maintains its Caracas - Panama connection, Avior connects Caracas to Medellín, and GOL operates the route to São Paulo.
- Domestic Flights: Domestic offerings are active with Rutaca Airlines operating to Maracaibo, Porlamar, Barcelona, Puerto Ordaz, and Maturín. Aeropostal and Avior cover routes between Porlamar, Maracaibo, and Barcelona. Aerolíneas Estelar connects Puerto Ordaz, Maracaibo, and San Antonio del Táchira, while Conviasa has resumed itineraries to various regions of the country.
Valencia: Venezuela's Operational Lung
While Maiquetía works at partial capacity, the Arturo Michelena International Airport in Valencia (VLN) remains the major support for air traffic. Valencia not only absorbs part of the domestic demand but also maintains key international routes that relieve pressure on the capital. Currently, its connections to Punta Cana stand out, along with the active Valencia-Madrid route operated by Plus Ultra, scheduled through the end of September to facilitate flow to Europe.
Routes on Hold
Maiquetía's reorganization has paused new routes that were about to be announced. The direct United Airlines flight (Houston - Caracas) has postponed its start to January 15, 2027. Similarly, the launch of the Wingo route to Margarita has been delayed, with a tentative start projected for the first quarter of 2027.
