What will you find if you fly through Maiquetía today? It's not the airport you remember. The double earthquake of 24 June 2026, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, damaged the runway and buildings at Simón Bolívar International Airport in La Guaira state.

Maiquetía is Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS/SVMI), Venezuela's main air gateway. Since 1 September 2026, it has operated from four temporary modular terminals next to the parking area. Passengers reach the plane by bus. It's the go-to option for flights to Europe and for most domestic routes.

According to Efecto Cocuyo (2026), 19 airlines already operate there, including Iberia, Air Europa, Copa, American Airlines, Laser and Conviasa. But the reopening started at roughly 33% of usual international flights (Infobae, 2026). Translation: fewer frequencies and seats that sell out sooner, so it pays to book further ahead.

La Chinita: One of the Main Airports of Venezuela, with a Direct Flight to Miami

If you live in Zulia or the Andes, your shortest route abroad may not go through Caracas. La Chinita International Airport sits about 15 km from downtown Maracaibo, 20 to 40 minutes by car depending on traffic.

La Chinita is La Chinita International Airport (MAR/SVMC), the main terminal in western Venezuela. It connects Maracaibo with Caracas and with destinations such as Miami, Bogotá and Panama. It's the most practical option for travelers from Zulia who want to fly abroad without connecting in Maiquetía.

American Airlines launched a daily Miami-Maracaibo flight on 14 July 2026, its first since 2019, according to Miami International Airport (2026). It's the only nonstop between the United States and Venezuela's second-largest city. For someone from Maracaibo, that means landing in Florida in about three hours without spending the night in Caracas.

Jacinto Lara, the Closest to Its City Among the Main Airports of Venezuela

Here's the airport almost nobody considers. Jacinto Lara International Airport, in Barquisimeto, is about 10 to 15 minutes from downtown by taxi, something neither Maiquetía nor La Chinita can match.

Jacinto Lara is Jacinto Lara International Airport (BRM/SVBM), the air terminal for Lara state. It has a single terminal, domestic flights and one international route to Panama. It serves Barquisimeto, Cabudare and much of the center-west. It's ideal if you want to fly abroad without driving all the way to Caracas.

Rutaca relaunched the Barquisimeto-Panama route in December 2025, with 110 passengers on the inaugural flight (Noticias Barquisimeto, 2025). Six months later, that route became a lifeline. With Maiquetía closed, Lara authorities cleared Jacinto Lara for international flights on 25 June 2026 (La Patilla, 2026). Travelers from Lara holding tickets via Caracas flew out of Barquisimeto instead and saved about five hours on the road.

To fly through the main airports of Venezuela, you need a valid national ID card (cédula) for domestic flights and a valid passport for international ones. Arrive two hours early for domestic flights and three for international ones. At Maiquetía, add extra margin, because the bus to the plane stretches out boarding.

Use authorized taxis from the arrivals area and agree on the fare before you get in, since they don't use meters. Between Maiquetía and Caracas, 2025 and 2026 reports put fares at 25 to 60 US dollars depending on the time of day. That 35-dollar spread is reason enough to ask before loading your suitcase.
